Patient Representatives

Self Management is all about improving the lives of people living with long-term conditions. Part of learning to manage your long-term condition and become an expert patient is building the confidence and learning the communications skills necessary to create an effective working partnership with your healthcare team. We find that many expert patients, once they have found their voice, have lots of valuable things to say about living with a long-term condition and self-managing. We encourage people who have been through our courses to become ambassadors for self-management and many of them go on to act as patient representatives for self management uk and other patient organisations, and for service providers who are looking to engage patients in the improvement of services.

Angie Usher is a Tutor, Assessor and Patient Voice for self management uk and a highly respected ambassador for self-management. In addition to her roles at self management uk, she is the Patient Representative for Unexplained Symptoms for the London Deanery.

Angie had a vibrant fashion career, prior to being diagnosed with multiple long-term conditions, including managing a chain of stores, and producing her own clothing line which dressed Take That and the Spice Girls, amongst others.

Angie is an engaged Expert Patient and an active self-manager. She manages her Fibromyalgia, IBS and other long-term conditions using the tools she learned on an Expert Patients Programme and now enjoys a second career as a trainer and self-management ambassador, making frequent appearances at events and in the media.

More recently she has been involved in the ‘Supporting Self Management for Life’ programme as a Patient Voice – a specialised role integral to teaching healthcare professionals about self-management. And she has just been invited to become a trustee of the IBS Network.
